POST ENV110 UNIT 3 AND 4 DISCUSSIONS

UNIT 3.2

A great article was published in the New York Times on Saturday about Deer Overpopulation and the management techniques (public hunting) used to keep the populations in check. For those of you who feel strongly about deer and cannot imagine why they should be hunted, I ask you to read an article published about one year ago by a business columnist for the Washington Post that puts the necessity of deer hunting into economic terms. Please read the following two articles:.nytimes.com/2012/05/19/opinion/why-bambi-must-go.html?action=click&module=Search&region=searchResults%230&version=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fquery.nytimes.com%2Fsearch%2Fsitesearch%2F%23%2FWhy%2BBambi%2BMust%2Bgo%2F&_r=0″>http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/19/opinion/why-bambi-must-go.html?action=click&module=Search®ion=searchResults%230&version=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fquery.nytimes.com%2Fsearch%2Fsitesearch%2F%23%2FWhy%2BBambi%2BMust%2Bgo%2F&_r=0 and .washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/01/AR2010110107194.html”>http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/01/AR2010110107194.html, and relate the content of the articles to the concepts of carrying capacity, evironmental resistance and other population ecology concepts from the chapters. I know this is a topic that can get heated, so I remind you to keep emotion out of your posts and continue to be civil and respectful to one another.

UNIT 3.3

Participate in this discussion ONLY after you have read Chapter 6, specifically the case study on China’s One-Child Policy at the beginning of the chapter, and the following CNN article: .cnn.com/2011/10/28/world/asia/china-one-child/”>http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/28/world/asia/china-one-child/ Based on the over-population issues in developing countries and the reasons why people in these countries choose to have a large number of children that you learned about in Chapter 6, what is your opinion on this extending the enforcement of this policy in China? You may wish to do additional research on this topic depending on your knowledge of it. Remember that your goal in your posting is to show me your understanding and application of the class material.

UNIT 4.2

People in developed countries are fond of warning people in developing countries to stop destroying rainforests. People of developing countries often respond that this is hypocritical, because the developed nations became wealthy by deforesting their land and exploiting its resources in the past. Provide an ecologically- (not emotionally) driven argument for either side and be prepared to defend it with FACTS not opinion. If you use outside material (which I strongly suggest), be sure to cite your source.

UNIT 4.3

t is almost too easy! Of course I am going to ask you to discuss Genetically Modifed Organisms! Please read the following article from Vanity Fair (2008) .vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/05/monsanto200805″>http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/05/monsanto200805. The article is a little long, but if you are not familiar with the Monsanto Company and their Round-up ready seeds (genetically modified to resist the pesticide Round Up), then it will be eye-opening. This discussion board is intended to promote an open-ended- we will see where your comments take us. I want your ecologically- and ethically- driven opinion on this article and its contents.
