Activity One: Interview a Manager

This activity is designed to raise your awareness concerning the day-to-day realities of managerial work.

Find a person who works in the field of management. It would be best to identify a top or middle manager, as described on page 7 of your text. Prior to conducting the interview, you will want to provide the manager with a list of the attached questions. During the interview, feel free to ask additional questions when applicable. Step 1: Schedule an interview with a person who holds a management position. As noted above, prior to the interview, provide a list of questions for the interviewee.

Step 2: Conduct the interview. Be sure to ask the following questions during your interview: (Be sure to adjust and modify as necessary.)

1. Briefly describe your current position and responsibilities.

2. Consider the skills and knowledge you need to be effective in your job. What are they, and how did you acquire them?

3. What do your subordinates expect from you as a manager?

4. What are the major challenges you face on the job?

5. How do you deal with difficult employees?

6. What, if anything, do you dislike about your job?

7. What do you enjoy most about your job?

8. What have been your biggest managerial mistakes thus far? What did you learn from them?

9. What are the critical differences between average managers and top-performing managers?

10. How does your organization go about recruiting qualified applicants? For example, do you promote from within? Where do you post job openings?

11. Does your organization use certain selection tests to screen applicants? (For example, cognitive ability tests, work sample tests, etc.)

12. During the screening process, do you check an applicant’s facebook page or other social media sites?

13. How important are cover letters and resumes during the application process? What do you look for?

14. What would you recommend to those who are interested in becoming managers?

15. In this class, we will be reading business books like Who Moved My Cheese? and The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. Do you have a business book you would recommend for management students?

16. Where do you see yourself in five years?

17. Develop three additional questions and ask during your interview.

18. Be sure to thank the interviewee for their time.

Step 3: Compose assignment. When formatting your activity, make sure to:

· Identify the person interviewed with contact information (this should be indicated at the top of your paper)

· Indicate each interview question with the response (this makes it much easier for me to read)

· Write a concluding paragraph that summarizes the overall interview and your thoughts concerning the activity.
